Basic Skills
The Basic Skills suite is designed for individuals who wish to take one step at a time or those who are interested in particular aspects of writing. They are currently offered as online courses that can be completed in any order. However, we also offer face-to-face workshops or sessions on the same material.

Writing Clearly and Concisely (1 day)
Writing Clearly and Concisely will equip you with the essential basic skills to write clear, concise content so that your readers can quickly and easily find and understand the information they need. It is the first step to writing better business documents, web content and complex reference material.
The course covers:
- how communication works
- the reader challenges
- checking the readability of your communications
- improving the readability of your writing
- dealing with factual information
- presenting information in emails.

Writing For Your Reader (1 day)
Writing For Your Reader focuses on analysing, structuring and developing your communication to optimise reader use and comprehension.
The course covers:
- identifying the purpose and desired outcome for your document
- analysing your audience (readers)
- creating a document framework
- navigation aids such as headings, tables of content
- strategies for structuring.

Effective Written Communication (2 days)
Effective Written Communication combines content from ‘Writing Clearly and Concisely’ and ‘Writing For Your Reader’.
The course will teach you how to:
- write a range of communications that are easy to use and contain clear, consistent concise language
- write emails that obtain the desired response
- write reports and winning proposals that provide conclusions and recommendations
- write emails and proposals OR write policies and procedures that people actually use.

Writing Great Summaries (1/2 Day)
The Writing Great Summaries workshop focuses on the techniques required to summarise more detailed source material.
It covers:
- what is a good summary
- key steps in paraphrasing
- writing different types of summary

- Introductions and Conclusions
- Executive Summaries.

improving existing documents (1 day)
Improving Existing Documents takes you through the process of rewriting an existing document that may not be working effectively. The key focus is how to go about the task; it assumes an understanding of how to write clearly and concisely.

- assessing what is wrong
- basic editing techniques
- improving sequencing
- fixing structural issues
- enhancing the presentation
- improving one of your own documents.
