What Do I Need?
Use this checklist of standard definitions to identify the skillset that best matches your need.
All our contractors have at least 2 years full time (or equivalent) work in their field and a relevant qualification. Rates quoted are inclusive of superannuation.
Junior Technical Writer
(expect to pay about $45 ph + oncosts*)
I need someone who can:
- create clear, concise, accurate documents, using our templates
- fit into a team or with our senior writer
- use Microsoft Word competently
- apply a language style guide, accurately
- create flowcharts, screen shots and supporting graphics
- follow a project plan, including milestones, reviews and feedback
Technical Editor
(expect to pay about $72 ph + oncosts*)
I need someone who can:
- correct usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation and be able to explain reasons for choices
- create and/or apply a language style guide, to a high level of consistency
- improve accuracy, completeness, consistency and readability of our material
- rewrite material for a different purpose
- use Microsoft Word to at least intermediate standard
- check numbers, tables, diagrams, imported images
- bring in technical/industry knowledge
- accept a project plan, including milestones
- discuss deliverables, including time and budget constraints
- independently manage time and communications to deliver to expectations
Technical Writer
(expect to pay about $65 ph + oncosts*)
I need someone who can:
- write our technical documents (procedures, instructions, specifications, manuals etc)
- revise our existing material for a new use
- add visual information (flowcharts, screen shots, tables, graphs etc)
- use Microsoft Word very well
- get the information they need from our subject matter experts, existing material, etc
- work both independently and collaboratively
- scope our existing documents and estimate how long it will take
- deliver to our project requirements
Experienced Technical Writer
(expect to pay about $80 ph + oncosts*)
I need someone who can:
- review the information we have
- measure the quality and usability of documents (heuristic evaluation, usability testing etc.)
- write technical documents for different media or have a strong area of specialization
- build relationships with the subject matter experts, stakeholders and management
- use our software
- understands content/document management systems
- use their experience in our sector or industry
- plan and run their own projects
Technical Communicator/Senior Technical Documenter/Technical Document Project Manager
(expect to pay from $90 ph + oncosts*)
I need someone who can:
- write complex technical document suites accurately and quickly
- manage multiple stakeholders, matrix management or large organisation internal clients
- scope large or complex documentation projects
- review, evaluate and recommend on documentation within a suite or content area
- advise on the effectiveness of existing and proposed documentation processes and practices
- share their knowledge with other writers in the team
- report on project status, outcomes, effectiveness and productivity
- apply expert industry knowledge or broad documentation knowledge
Technical Documentation Manager/Team Lead
(expect to pay from $115 ph + oncosts*)
Above, plus management training or >15 years' experience in a range of environments.
I need someone who can:
- analyse, evaluate and reform documentation suites
- build, train and manage a documentation team
- respond to organisational requirements
- manage and report on budgets
- advise on documentation strategies including system options and practices
* oncosts = payroll tax, workers compensation and other insurances
